Tanzanian Professor Mohamed Janabi Elected WHO Regional Director for Africa
In a historic move, Professor Mohamed Janabi of Tanzania has been elected as the new World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Director for Africa. The election took place during a Special Session of the WHO Regional Committee for Africa in Geneva, ahead of the World Health Assembly.
Professor Janabi succeeds Dr. Chikwe Ihekweazu, who had been serving in an acting capacity following the passing of Dr. Faustine Engelbert Ndugulile in August 2024. Dr. Ihekweazu has since been appointed Executive Director of the WHO Health Emergencies Programme.
With over two decades of experience in public health policy, planning, and management, Professor Janabi is a highly respected expert in the field. A former professor at the University of Dar es Salaam, he has been widely published and consulted by national and international health bodies, including WHO.
His appointment marks a significant milestone for Africa, bringing not only regional representation but also a deep commitment to strengthening health systems and addressing public health challenges across the continent. In his new role, Professor Janabi will lead strategic initiatives across WHO’s 47 African Member States, working to implement the global health agenda and advance inclusive healthcare solutions.
