NPCL to begin Drilling in the New Northern and Southern Nigeria Oil Fields, mentions the names of the New Oil fields.
NNPC to begin Drilling in the New Northern and Southern Nigeria Oil Field, mentions the names of the New Oil Fields.
The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) is set to significantly expand the nation's crude oil production with the commencement of exploration activities in two new key areas: the Kolmani Field, located between Bauchi and Gombe states in Northern Nigeria, and Tongeji Island in Ogun State in the South West.
Mr. Bayo Ojulari, Group Chief Executive Officer (GCEO) of NNPC Ltd, recently confirmed the imminent resumption of activities in the North. During an interview with BBC Hausa Service, he assured Nigerians that drilling would resume swiftly at the Kolmani field and confirmed that work on the crucial AKK gas pipeline project would also continue.
He was quoted as saying: "NNPC will continue oil drilling in the Kolmani field and will continue the work on the AKK gas pipeline from Ajaokuta to Kaduna to Kano. The companies working on the projects will continue, and new ones are also welcome."
Mr. Ojulari further emphasized the significance of these initiatives for national economic growth. "The projects are critical in boosting the economy and the impact will be felt by all Nigerians," he stated. "By next month, people will begin to see. We will start work on the AKK gas pipeline and the Kolmani, Insha Allah."
The Ajaokuta-Kaduna-Kano (AKK) gas pipeline, a 614km infrastructure project connecting Ajaokuta to Kano via key northern states, is crucial for distributing gas and unlocking new economic opportunities, particularly leveraging hydrocarbon discoveries in the northern region like the Kolmani field. The 2019 Kolmani River II Well discovery in the Gongola Basin confirmed major oil and gas reserves, with commercial drilling commencing in 2022, attracting significant investment, promising job creation, and boosting government revenue.
In a related development for Southern Nigeria, NNPCL is also poised to commence oil and gas exploration activities in Ogun State, specifically focusing on Tongeji Island within the Ipokia Local Government Area.
According to Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola, representing the Ogun West senatorial district, Ogun State is poised to join Nigeria's oil-producing states shortly. Speaking about the development, Senator Adeola confirmed that necessary arrangements are actively being made to initiate crude oil extraction on Tongeji Island, which is located near the border with the Republic of Benin.
These new exploration and production efforts in both Northern and Southern regions will boost Nigeria's oil output targets. Increasing production from these and optimizing existing fields will significantly raise government revenue, attract investment, create jobs, and improve energy security. These efforts are key to the NNPCL GCEO's mandate to increase Nigeria's crude oil production to 2.3 million bpd by 2027 and potentially 3 million bpd by 2030.
