Rivers State Government Shuts Down Hospital in Town
The Rivers State Anti-Quackery Committee has shut down Standard Maternity Clinic in Borokiri after a patient, Mrs. Victoria Paris, reportedly died following a caesarean section at the facility.
The committee, led by Dr. Vincent Wachukwu, conducted an unannounced inspection of the clinic at No. 2 Captain Amangala Street in response to media reports about the incident. The investigation revealed that the clinic, operated by Mrs. Comfort Etuk, was a converted 3-bedroom apartment functioning as a 6-bed maternity ward without any licensed nurses.
Investigators discovered that auxiliary staff were performing surgeries in a poorly equipped and substandard environment, highlighting significant safety and regulatory violations. The committee's findings underscored the dangers posed by the facility’s operations, prompting its immediate closure to prevent further risks to patients.
